A shocking display from Kerala handed Karnataka a lifeline in its quest to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
After choosing to bat at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday, Kerala was bundled out for 49 — the fourth-lowest total in the history of Indian List ‘A’ cricket.
The chase lasted a grand total of 31 minutes, with the home team finishing the contest in just 5.5 overs.
Leggie Shreyas Gopal (five for 19) did the bulk of the damage, but the inept Kerala batsmen did themselves no favours.
They frequently played down the wrong line, imagining demons — both in the pitch and the bowling attack — where none existed.
Kerala skipper and three-drop Sachin Baby (12, 35b) was the only one to offer any resistance, but when he was trapped on the pads — going back to a full delivery from Gopal — the end was near.
The embarrassing loss put paid to the visitor’s hopes of progressing to the quarterfinal stage.
Flawless day
Karnataka, on the other hand, enjoyed a flawless day at the office. The bowlers gave nothing away, while the fielding was electric.
Manish Pandey, in particular, stood out with two stunning diving efforts to dismiss Rohan Prem and Niyas Nizar. The accurate Shreyas — four of his five victims fell leg-before — recorded his best-ever List ‘A’ figures.
Karnataka (12 points) and Gujarat, which defeated Jammu and Kashmir by 36 runs in another fixture, now battle for a spot in the last-eight. If Karnataka is to make the cut, it must win its final group outing (against J&K) on Friday, and hope that Gujarat (16 points) loses to Kerala.
Jharkhand (20 points), meanwhile, trounced Railways to sail into the knockout rounds. M.S. Dhoni scored an entertaining 37 (30b, 1x4, 2x6).
The scores:
Kerala 49 in 22 overs (Shreyas Gopal five for 19) lost to Karnataka 51 for one in 5.5 overs.
Gujarat 187 in 49.2 overs (Rujul Bhatt 66, Axar Patel 27, Rohit Dahiya 27, Omar Alam three for 31, Waseem Raza three for 38) bt J&K 151 in 47.2 overs (Parvez Rasool 65, Sandeep Singh 44, Hardik Patel four for 28).
Jharkhand 211 for five in 50 overs (Saurabh Tiwary 49, Kumar Deobrat 38, M.S. Dhoni 37, Ishank Jaggi 28) bt Railways 96 in 37 overs (Arindam Ghosh 44, Sonu Kumar Singh four for 15).
