It was another of Virender Sehwag's blinder. But it did not come from his blade that has given India 17,253 runs at a brisk pace, destroying the best of bowlers the world over. It came through the social media late on Monday evening that the dashing opener has announced retirement from international cricket though it did not come in exact terms.
Sehwag, who last appeared in India colours, in March 2013 before being dropped for poor form, was already finished as far as his international career was concerned. As the selectors have only gone in for young players with an eye for the future, the door was all but shut for Sehwag to make one final return to international cricket, though he continues to play in domestic cricket for Delhi and Haryana this season. In the two Ranji Trophy matches he played for Haryana, Sehwag scored two half-centuries, both in losing causes – losing the first innings lead to Maharashtra and by four wickets to Delhi.
Sehwag said it as much in Dubai on Monday at a Masters Champions League event, where he was posing along with retired international stars Brian Lara of the West Indies, Michael Vaughan of England, Graeme Smith of South Africa among others.
Sehwag, who turns 37 on Tuesday, was quoted as saying: "If I am not retired I will not play. I will go back to India and announce my retirement."
He further said: "It's so exciting. It will be great to renew the rivalries (with retired international cricketers). It's good to have all of us playing this tournament. The facilities in the UAE have always been world class. I think it's great for cricket to show what we can offer to develop the sport at the grassroots."
As one of the conditions to be a part of the MCL, a player has to have "retired from all forms of international cricket".
The official Facebook page of MCL2020 announced on Monday evening: "Virender Sehwag officially announces his retirement. #MCL2020 #VirenderSehwag". MCL is scheduled for two weeks in February 2016.
The social media was abuzz with tributes already flowing for one of India's greatest openers and one of the world's most explosive batsmen.
As and when Sehwag announces his retirement, he will be the second player in recent times to do so after Zaheer Khan called it quits last week in Mumbai
