A brace from striker Shakawat H. Rony (24th & 66th) enabled Bangladesh down 10-men Bhutan 3-0 for a consolation win in Group ‘B’ of the SAFF Suzuki Cup football championship at the Greenfield stadium on Monday.
Playing with freedom, Bangladesh were up and running in the eight minute when Topu Barman headed in the opening goal following a corner. Bhutan responded positively and Chencho Gyeltshen shot out narrowly in the 19th minute.
However, soon after Bhutan was reduced to 10-men in the 22nd minute after Chimi Dorji was given the red card by Indian referee Pranjal Banerjee for bringing down Hemontha Biswas.
Shakawat H. Rony sent Bhutan goalkeeper Hari Gurung on the wrong way to increase the lead for Bangladesh. The decision didn’t go down well with Bhutan coach Pema who said it was a harsh decision as the tackle occurred outside the box. The coach also said during the post match brief that the refereeing was biased against his team.
Hari Gurung denied Rony in the 40th minute and Gyeltshen had a chance to reduce the lead in the 44th minute but the striker couldn’t control the ball inside the box to waste the chance.
In the second half, Tshering Dorji stinging right footer was parried away by Bangla goalkeeper Shahid in the 62nd minute. However, it didn’t take long for Bangladesh to increase the lead as Rony found the back of the net in the 66th minute with a clinical finish after receiving a long ball from the middle. Bangladesh wasted several chances to increase the lead in the remaining time. Bangladesh coach Maruful Haque though happy with the win wasn’t satisfied with the number of goals scored by his team.
