It was far from a complete performance, but after what the Rangers endured on their winless three-game trip through Western Canada, they’ll take any kind of victory.
The Rangers outlasted the Oilers in a 4-2, penalty-laden affair at the Garden on Tuesday night in which they took three of their six penalties in the third period. Edmonton, which defeated the Rangers 7-5 on Friday, had five penalties.
Mats Zuccarello, who told the Daily News after Saturday’s loss to Calgary the Rangers were “too soft,” opened the scoring with a goal from the left circle while falling down at 5:04 of the first, his team-best 14th goal of the season.
Dylan McIlrath scored his first career NHL goal at 7:54 of the second period to give the Rangers (19-9-4, 42 points) a 2-1 lead. Dominic Moore won an offensive-zone faceoff and got the puck to Yandle, whose cross-ice pass was met with a one-time blast by McIlrath from the left point.
Defenseman Brady Skjei, who was called up earlier Tuesday after the Wild claimed Jarret Stoll off waivers, was having a solid NHL debut until his neutral-zone giveaway led to Jordan Eberle’s breakaway goal at 18:20 of the second. He turned the puck over at the right boards directly to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who found Eberle streaking up the center of the ice.
The Rangers swiftly grabbed the lead back on Rick Nash power-play goal with 38.7 seconds left in the period after Edmonton (14-16-2, 30 points) was penalized for too many men on the ice. Zuccarello fed Nash down low near the right post, where Nash’s first attempt was stopped by Anders Nilsson but he quickly hammered in his own rebound for his 10th goal of the season.
Jesper Fast added an empty-netter with 3.2 seconds left. Henrik Lundqvist made 18 saves.
