Indian cricketer
Shikhar Dhawan,
who was used in the fourth innings of the fourth and final Test against
South Africa which ended on Monday in Delhi as a part-time bowler, has
been reported for suspect bowling action. The International Cricket
Council (ICC) informed in a release on Wednesday morning that a report
by the match officials for the fourth and final Test at the Feroz Shah
Kotla Stadium in the country’s capital was handed over to the Indian
cricket team management. The report from the match officials highlighted
concerns about the legality of the bowling action of the dashing
opening batsman, who is seldom used as a bowler by the Indian cricket
team in international cricket.

After being set an improbable target of 481 runs to win, the South
African team finally found their confidence as they went on stonewalling
the Indian bowlers for a majority of the fourth day at Delhi and also
in the first session on the fifth day. Indian team was seen getting a
little restless as South African batsmen Temba Bavuma, Hashim Amla, Faf
du Plessis and AB de Villiers dropped anchor in their second innings and
fought really hard to force a draw. The South Africans eventually lost
the game by 337 runs.

On the evening of the fourth day, a desperate Indian cricket team
used the services of their part-time bowlers Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Virat
Kohli and even Cheteshwar Pujara, but could not break the stubborn
stand between Amla and de Villiers. Dhawan bowled three overs in his
spell, which had one maiden and gave away nine runs without any success.
Dhawan was not used by India on the fifth and final day of the Test.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) informed in a release,
“India’s Shikhar Dhawan has been reported with a suspect bowling action
during the fourth Test against South Africa, which the host won in New
Delhi on Monday. The match officials’ report, which was handed over to
the India team management, cited concerns about the legality of the
30-year-old’s off-spin deliveries.”
The release added, “Dhawan’s bowling action will now be scrutinised
further under the ICC process relating to suspected illegal bowling
actions reported in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. He is required to undergo
testing within 14 days, and, during this period, Dhawan is permitted to
continue bowling in international cricket until the results of the
testing are known.”
