New Delhi: That India’s limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and discarded opener Gautam Gambhir don’t share a warm relationship was often regarded as just a media hype but in a recent match, bitterness between the two was on public display.
Dhoni, who retired from Test cricket last year in December, played for his stated side Jharkhand after a 8-year gap. Though he didn’t live up to the expectations with the bat, his guidance helped the Varun Aaron-led side reach the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy – India’s premier domestic one-day cricket tournament.
In the quarters, Jharkhand was pitted against Gambhir-led Delhi cricket team. Put into bat, Delhi posted a below par total of 225 runs. In reply, despite Dhoni’s defiant unbeaten innings of 70 runs, Jharkhand could only score 126 and lost the match comprehensively by 99 runs.
The incident that revealed the hard feelings happened in the 38th over. Delhi needed just one wicket and medium pacer Subodh Bhatti had the ball. On the last ball of the over, Bhatti luckily got the wicket of Vikash Singh as the umpire failed to see the thick edge that the ball took before hitting the pads. The wicket concluded the Jharkhand innings. Dhoni remained unbeaten at the other end.
Following the age-old cricket tradition, Dhoni went to shake hands with all the opposition players. While all the Delhi players were courteous and respectful, Gambhir rudely ignored Dhoni and kept on walking with his players.
This is not the only example of Gambhir’s rudeness. He has been involved in several scuffles with opposition players, be it in international cricket or IPL and this year he has not even spared the domestic cricket. Earlier, during the Ranji Trophy, Gambhir had a heated argument with Bengal skipper Manoj Tiwary. Clearly, Gambhir has some behavioural issues and someone – be it BCCI or DDCA — really needs to explain this to him.
