Vijay Hazare Round-up: Karnataka stay alive; Rahane century in vain

Karnataka obliterated Kerala in a low-scoring encounter, courtesy a Shreyas Gopal fifer, to keep their Vijay Hazare campaign alive while Rajasthan beat Mumbai despite a sparkling century from Ajinkya Rahane. Meanwhile in Group B, Jharkhand have earned themselves a spot in the knockouts following their victory over Railways.
Group A
Baba Aparajith (55), Murali Vijay (44) and Ravichandran Ashwin (36) - in a promoted batting position of No. 5 - nullified Tanmay Agarwal's breezy century as Tamil Nadu recorded a three-wicket win over hosts Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium.
A solid bowling performance, led by Lakshmipathi Balaji (3-33) helped the visitors bowl out Hyderabad for 230 despite Agarwal's efforts. In reply, Tamil Nadu lost a few wickets but the target was too little for Hyderabad to pull off a win.
Brief scores: Hyderabad 230 in 49.2 overs (Tanmay Agarwal 105, Danny Dereck Prince 31; Lakshmipathi Balaji 3-31) lose to Tamil Nadu 233-7 in 47.5 overs (Baba Aparajith 55, Murali Vijay 44, Ravichandran Ashwin 36) by 3 wickets.
An all-round batting performance from Rajasthan helped them overcome a stiff Mumbai total - buoyed by an Ajinkya Rahane century - to win by 5 wickets.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai suffered a bit of a top-order wobble as Akhil Herwadkar, Shashank Singh and Shreyas Iyer fell in quick succession. Rahane, batting at No. 4, notched up a 112-ball knock of 114 and Suryakumar Yadav scored a half-century to steady the ship. Vital contributions from Iqbal Abdulla (31) and Rohit Raje (21) helped Mumbai post 301-9.
In reply, a 145-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rajat Bhatia (94 not out) and Ashok Menaria (86) fuelled Rajasthan chase after Dishant Yagnik (40) and Puneet Yadav (49) set the tone. Abhishek Nayar bowled exceptionally well for Mumbai (2-28) but rest failed to keep up the pressure as Rajasthan won with five wickets and an over to spare.
Brief scores: Mumbai 301-9 (Ajinkya Rahane 114, Suryakumar Yadav 52; Pankaj Singh 4-55) lose to Rajasthan 305-5 in 49 overs (Rajat Bhatia 94*, Ashok Menaria 86, Puneet Yadav 49, Dishant Yagnik 40; Abhishek Nayar 2-28) by 5 wickets.
Assam ended their woeful Vijay Hazare campaign with their sixth straight defeat as Services completed a six-wicket victory in Hyderabad on Thursday (December 17). Barring Amit Verma (78) and Sibsankar Roy (45), Assam's batting struggled but managed to put on a decent total of 261 despite a fifer from Diwesh Pathania.
Half-centuries from Soumik Chatterjee (73), Amit Pachhara (75 not out) and Rajat Paliwal (52) helped Services canter to a six-wicket victory with 28 balls to spare.
Brief scores: Assam 261-8 (Amit Verma 78; Diwesh Pathania 5-54) lose to Services 262-4 in 45.2 overs (Amit Pachchara 75 not out, Soumik Chatterjee 73, Rajat Paliwal 52; Jogeswar Bhumij 2-47) by 6 wickets.
GROUP B
Hardik Patel and Axar Patel came to Gujurat's rescue as they defeated Jammu & Kashmir by 36 runs to keep their hopes alive in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Batting first, Gujurat ambled to 187 all out in the final over. The side could have been bowled out for a lot lesser had it not been for the contributions from Rujul Bhatt (66), Axar Patel (27), Rohit Dahiya (27) and Rush Kalaria (20). Defending a modest total, Hardik and Axar picked up a combined six for 48 as J&K crashed to 151-all out. Captain Parvez Rasool's 65 went in vain.
Brief scores: Gujurat 187-all out in 49.2 overs (Rujul Bhatt 66, Rohit Dahiya 27, Omar Alam 3-31, Waseem Raza 3-38) beat Jammu & Kashmir 151-all out in 47.2 overs (Parvez Rasool 65, Hardik Patel 4-28, Axar Patel 2-20) by 36 runs.
Jharkhand confirmed themselves of a slot in the next phase as they defeated Railways by a massive 115 runs.
Batting first, the Jharkhand top-order came good with each of the top five scoring at least 24 runs to help the side reach 211 in 45 overs. MS Dhoni was the third-higest scorer with 37 off 30.
In reply, Railways' innings never got off to a start as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 96. Sonu Singh was the most succesful bowler with four for 15.
Brief scores: Jharkhand 211 for five in 45 overs (Saurabh Tiwary 49, Kumar Deobrat 38, Avinash Yadav 2-44) beat Railways 96-all out in 37 overs (Arindam Ghosh 44, Sonu Singh 4-15, Ankit Dabas 2-20) by 115 runs.
Karnataka received a much-need boost to their Vijay Hazare campaign as Shreyas Gopal's five-for helped defending champions skittle Kerala for just 49 to keep their knockouts hopes alive with a crushing 9-wicket victory.
Heading into the match with just 8 points from their four league games, Karnataka were forced to drop star all-rounder Staurt Binny, who sustained an ankle injury day before, but had their captain Vinay Kumar, frontline pacer Abhimanyu Mithun and regular wicketkeeper CM Gautam making a comeback after missing out the crucial tie against table-toppers Jharkhand.
Chasing a meager 50, in a do-or-die game, Karnataka lost Mayank Agarwal to a dubious leg before decision in the second over. Undeterred, Karun Nair quickly switched gears, smashing five boundaries in his 19-ball 24 while KL Rahul, promoted to the opener's slot, hit the only six of the game. The unbeaten 45-run stand for the second wicket between the duo helped Karnataka script a commanding 9-wicket victory in less than six overs.
Brief scores: Kerala 49 (Shreyas Gopal 5-19, Vinay Kumar 2-6) lost to Karnataka 51-1 (Karun Nair 24*, KL Rahul 19*) by 9 wickets
GROUP C
A woeful batting display by Andhra resulted in them subsiding to a meagre total of 87 and handing Vidarbha a comprehensive win by 10 wickets in a Group C encounter on Thursday (December 17). The opening duo of Umesh Yadav and Shrikant Wagh shared five sticks between them. Akshay Karnewar twirled and spun his way to picking up four scalps. Only Prasanth Kumar offered some resistance with a gritty knock of 38. Jitesh Sharma and Faiz Fazal then unfurled a volley of fine strokes as Andhra hurtled towards a heavy defeat. By winning four out of their five games till now, Vidarbha are perched at the top of the table in Group C.
Brief scores: Andhra 87 all-out in 25.3 overs (Prasanth Kumar 38; Akshay Karnewar 4-13, Umesh Yadav 3-16) lost to Vidarbha 91 for 0 in 19.2 overs (Jitesh Sharma 47*, Faiz Fazal 44*) by 10 wickets.
Irfan Pathan, Swapnil Singh and Yusuf Pathan shared the spoils as Baroda routed the whipping boys of Group C, Tripura. If Irfan made the early incisions, then Swapnil, the slow left-arm orthodox, spun Tripura further into trouble by snaring a five-wicket haul. Yusuf too chipped in with three wickets. Despite Chiranjit Paul running through Baroda's top-order, Tripura couldn't stop the opposition ranks from winning the lopsided encounter by six wickets. Ambati Rayudu remained unbeaten on 31 for Baroda.
Brief scores: Tripura 58 all-out in 22.2 overs (Manisankar Murasingh 10; Swapnil Singh 5-25, Yusuf Pathan 3-24) lost to Baroda 61 for 4 in 6.1 overs (Ambati Rayudu 31*; Chiranjit Paul 3-27) by 6 wickets.
Dhruv Shorey and Milind Kumar anchored Delhi's chase and piloted them to a five-wicket win in a keenly-contested game against Maharashtra at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Swapnil Gugale and Domnic Joseph gave Maharashtra a glimmer of hope with early strikes. However, once Shorey and Milind stitched a crucial stand of 59 for the fourth wicket, Delhi were firmly in the ascendancy. Earlier, Delhi's bowlers plugged away relentlessly to leave Maharashtra precariously placed at 99 for 6. Kedar Jadhav, who has been in sublime form in this tournament, tried to resurrect the innings with a quickfire knock of 48. The only other performance of note was Swapnil's 44. The spin twins, Manan Sharma and Pawan Negi, took three wickets each for Delhi.
Brief scores: Maharashtra 194 for 9 in 50 overs (Kedar Jadhav 48, Swapnil Gugale 44; Manan Sharma 3-21, Pawan Negi 3-38) lost to Delhi 197 for 5 in 48.4 overs (Milind Kumar 58*, Dhruv Shorey 57; Swapnil Gugale 2-39) by 5 wickets.
GROUP D
Madhya Pradesh chased down the target of 263 in what turned out to be a see-saw battle against Bengal in Group D. The trio of Rajat Patidar, Harpreet Singh and Anand Bias were the mainstays of the batting line-up and composed half-centuries. Ashok Dinda struck late in the innings to prise out Venkatesh Iyer. However, Bias and Parth Sahani took Madhya Pradesh past the finish line. Earlier, Sayan Mondal combined selective power and steadfast defence as Bengal ended up with a substantial total on the board. Puneet Datey was the pick of the bowlers for Madhya Pradesh with two scalps to his name.
Brief scores: Bengal 262 all-out in 50 overs (Sayan Mondal 88, Abhimanyu Easwaran 45; Puneet Datey 2-42) lost to Madhya Pradesh 263 for 5 in 46.5 overs (Harpreet Singh 71, Rajat Patidar 63; Ashok Dinda 2-35) by 5 wickets.
Umang Sharma held Uttar Pradesh's innings together to help them usurp Goa in a Group D game played in Rajkot. Rinku Singh and Saurabh Dubey played handy knocks as well. Shadab Jakati struck at regular intervals for Goa, but he didn't get much support from other bowlers. Earlier, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawla and Dubey whittled away at Goa's batting line-up to clean them up for a below-par total. Reagan Pinto's knock of 66 was the highlight of Goa's innings. Sagun Kamat also slammed an enterprising innings of 57.
Brief scores: Goa 218 all-out in 49.5 overs (Reagan Pinto 66, Sagun Kamat 57; Suresh Raina 2-32, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2-38) lost to Uttar Pradesh 224 for 4 in 36.3 overs (Umang Sharma 85, Rinku Singh 51*; Shadab Jakati 3-48) by 6 wickets.
