It’s official now. Chennai will not host any men’s game of the ICC World Twenty20.

The city will, instead, be staging women’s matches of the competition.

Reacting to the news, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) secretary K.S. Viswanathan said here on Friday, “We will conduct whatever matches are given to us. We will, like always, be a good host.”

“We have a very efficient team and they know their job.”

The men’s matches, all of which would be televised, were not given to the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium because three stands, ‘I’, ‘J’ and ‘K’, had not been cleared by the city corporation.

There was a feeling among many here that the non-India men’s matches, at least, could have been given to Chepauk.

“Even without those three stands, the M.A. Chidambaram can accommodate 24,000 spectators. Chepauk would have attracted more spectators for non-India matches than at several other centres,” an official said.

League matches postponed

All matches in the TNCA lower division cricket league scheduled for Saturday and Sunday have been postponed due to wet outfields.
